Kids Hair Salon, Making Haircuts Fun

If you want to find a great example of a well-established mom-and-pop shop, look no further than Kids Hair Salon, which has been making haircuts fun for kids at Grossmont Center since 1986.

Back then, it was located where Pier 1 is now and it was called Heaven to Seven, Kids Hair Salon. There was a small children’s boutique in the front and a two-station hair salon in back. After the Walker family bought the salon, it moved to the center’s “old courtyard” and that is where the current Kids Hair Salon was born. Over the years, there has been lots of change and comings and goings—the salon has moved its location at the center about four to five times—but Kids Hair Salon is still here and run by the original family. If you are looking to shop local, this salon is a must-visit for you and your family.

In 2011, Kristina Norris, the daughter of the owner, took over the business. With her sales and marketing background, Kristina knew that she needed to take Kids Hair Salon to the next level to continue serving generations to come. “My favorite thing to hear and see is when grandparents bring in their grandchildren because they took their kids to get their haircut 30 years ago, or when parents come in with their children because they remember getting their haircut here when they were little,” she says.

So she created social media avenues with a logo, a website, and online appointments; she also revamped the whole look and feel of the salon. Because customer service is Kristina’s number-one priority, she also set out to work with the employees she inherited when she took over the business in order to raise the salon’s one-star rating on Yelp. While a few staffers have retired over the years, there are others who have been with Kids Hair Salon for more than 20 years, as well as some new awesome additions to the team. It’s a great combination that results in personalized attention and care to each young client and their parents. (And yes, that Yelp rating went up to four-plus stars; the salon also has a similar rating on Google and is certified by the Better Business Bureau).

One thing that never changed was the types of services Kids Hair Salon offers. Of course, there’s the signature heart braid with bows and glitter, but the salon has added many new services and products. Your child can try out fun new looks with colored hair extensions, an updo, a braid, or any of the trendy hairstyles the team members specialize in. The salon also features the Bella Capelli Bar, with the most fashionable styles for girls, from the sleek tresses of Tokyo Chick to the buoyant curls of Paris Runway. Add-ons can include hair chalk or feathers, tinsel, deep conditioning, and vibrantly colored hair extensions. Kids Hair Salon, Making Haircuts Fun

There are also super practical services any parent can appreciate—special trims just for bangs or around the ears or on the neck, lice prevention, comb-outs for stubborn tangles, or treatments for swimmer’s hair. All full haircuts come with shampoo and conditioner; a blowout or a braid with accessories; car chairs; and access to a Play Station. The salon also has three TVs, a playroom, and treats such as stickers and lollipops.

If you’re a parent who wants to make your baby’s first haircut a special memory, Kids Hair Salon can help fulfill that wish! The First Haircut Package includes a car chair specially sized for babies, a color photo and magnetic frame, a sticker and lollipop, and, of course, a keepsake certificate with a lock of baby’s hair. And that’s not the only special occasion you can celebrate at Kids Hair Salon. The team also offers birthday parties with glamour girl, princess, superhero, or fashion diva themes. Partygoers can get cool hairstyles or braids, photo ops, themed goodie bags, special party favors, coupons for haircuts during a return visit, and much more. Kids Hair Salon can also bring the party to you, setting up its stylists in your home for a luxurious party experience.

Kids Hair Salon also offers several products to choose from, such as all-natural hair lines by Glop and Glam and Original Sprout, and a large selection of up-to-date bows, headbands, and barrettes. And like many of the other locally owned shops at Grossmont Center, the salon offers a variety of promotions such as discounts on purchases. With its wide array of products and services—plus stylists experienced in working with special needs children and adults and salon hours offered seven days a week—Kids Hair Salon does its very best to accommodate every parent and little customer every single day.

With its location at Grossmont Center, Kids Hair Salon makes taking your child for a haircut more like a fun family outing and less of a chore. You can walk around and enjoy the open-air center, and let your child show off the new hair-do with a visit to one of the center’s restaurants, whether it’s for a meal or just a sweet treat.

Shopping local is a show of support for business owners, such as Kristina, who invest countless hours on how they can best serve their customers. She says that she feels that support, not just from her clients but also from Grossmont Center itself. “When the Grossmont Center’s family took back over in 2015, I felt immediately part of their family,” she says. “Their focus and passion to help small businesses is wonderful, helpful and so appreciated; because there are more small businesses going under, it is a refreshing feeling knowing that Grossmont Center cares so much.”

Kristina is grateful to her loyal customers who shop local at Kids Hair Salon and thanks them for their years of support. “I am a passionate owner and believe that for a business to exist for 32 years here in California it deserves a gold medal and has to be doing something right. Try us for the first time or love us all over again!”
