Grossmont Center is closely monitoring the rapidly evolving Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and its impact on our region and community. Out of an abundance of caution, Grossmont Center has decided to RESCHEDULE ALL MARCH EVENTS. We regret any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding as we navigate this public health issue in the context of keeping our communities safe.
When your children are riding a bicycle, are they like Superman—faster than a speeding bullet, able to leap over curbs or speed bumps in a single bound? Then your family needs to attend the superhero-themed Bike Rodeo! This day of safety, education, and fun, co-sponsored by Grossmont Center and the City of La Mesa, takes place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 21, 2020. Admission is free; all your child needs to do is bring a bike, a helmet, and an eagerness to learn the basic rules of the road for bicycles.
Learning is Fun at Bicycle Rodeo
A bike rodeo event is a great way for kids to develop the skills they need to travel safely on their bicycles. Cycling is a wonderful form of exercise, and it gives children the freedom to ride to school, soccer practice, or a friend’s house. But does your child know what to do at a stop sign or how to navigate streets alongside cars? The goal of the Bike Rodeo at Grossmont Center is to promote biking as a mode of transportation as well as recreation, with safety as the ultimate goal.
One of the main attractions at this bicycle rodeo is the fun and challenging obstacle course that helps kids of all ages feel comfortable on a bike in various situations. The course reinforces essential skills such as safely braking to a quick stop, steering a bike around tight turns, and staying aware of the surroundings and potential hazards. Kids can also learn the hand signals for turning and stopping, as well as how to do an ABC bike check (A is for air in tires, B is for brakes, and C is for the chain and cranks).
Several local organizations also participate in the bike rodeo event, offering information and resources on health and wellness, active transportation, and other topics. Prizes are awarded for best bike decoration and superhero costume, so families are encouraged to let their creativity fly! Music, snacks, and giveaways add to the bicycle rodeo’s lively energy.
The Bike Rodeo takes place in the Center’s West Court (between Chuze Fitness and Fuddruckers®), and there is plenty of free parking. A limited supply of free bike helmets are available for kids who need them. Helmets are distributed on a first come, first served basis.
